| ![]() What Is This Web Site?The purpose of this web site is to show off the beautiful and unique bridges in Portland, Oregon. For example, The Fremont Bridge (1973) is the newest Willamette River bridge in Portland, and it helps define the cityscape. The oldest highway bridge in the city is the Hawthorne Bridge (1910). The Steel Bridge (1912) is a unique design; its two spans can be raised and lowered independently. The author's favorite bridge is the St. Johns Bridge (1931, pictured at the top of this page), the only steel suspension bridge in Portland and one of only three major suspension bridges in Oregon (the other two are across the Crooked River/Lake Billy Chinook).
