What is pdx.singles?

pdx.singles is a Usenet newsgroup for Portland, Oregon. It is frequented mostly by single people in the Portland area. Some people from out of town participate, and some people who are married participate (in at least one case, they met via a pdx.singles event).

pdx.singles folks talk about just about every topic besides dating and being single! It is not a "meat market"; it is more of a social group of people who happen to be (mostly) single.

pdx.singles has had real events including a some sort of gathering the third Sunday afternoon of every month. Group activity seems to come and go; check in with the group to see what's happening lately, but if you get involved - you can host an event! And people will come, especially if there is food or alcohol involved. :-)

To participate in the pdx.singles group, you need to read the Usenet newsgroup called pdx.singles. If you know what newsgroups are, try subscribing to pdx.singles. If you do not know how to use newsgroups or Usenet, ask someone at your Internet Service Provider how you can use them. (Your ISP may have newsgroups but may not happen to carry pdx.singles. They can carry it easily - just ask them to get it.) You can also read the group via Google Groups (click here)

What exactly are newsgroups?

Earthlink has a resonably decent page describing what Usenet newsgroups are. Unless you are an Earthlink customer, though, you'll need to use your own ISP's news server to read/send news articles!

How to read the pdx.singles Usenet newsgroup?

• Get software to read newsgroups (Usenet). This software is sometimes called a "Newsreader". This is NOT the same thing as "the web". But you can use software like Netscape and MS Outlook to read newsgroups. A great newsgroup reader for Windows is called Agent (or Free Agent).
• Setup your newsreader. Mostly you need to type in your ISP's news server name somewhere. For example, if you had Earthlink, your news server address might be "news.earthlink.net" (it varies by ISP).
• Point to the newsgroup pdx.singles
• OR, read pdx.singles from the web with via Google Groups (click here)

You can post personals ads to pdx.singles, but it is more appropriate to post them to personals newsgroups like pnw.personals and pdaxs.ads.personals. I also maintain PNW-PERSONALS-WEB, a free personal ads web site for the Pacific Northwest.
